Sandhill cranes in flight        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Sandhill cranes are one of the main reasons that nature photographers flock to the Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge in New Mexico; the other is the numerous snow geeese.   These are some of my photos of cranes from a November 2010 visit; another page has shots of cranes landing, another has cranes at rest, and another shows cranes roosting on icy ponds.   The bird at bottom left has its legs tucked into its body feathers, an odd posture that cranes sometimes assume on very cold days.

Other pictures of cranes and geese at Bosque are here, here, and here; also, look at the Bosque del Apache page for photos from other visits.
