Roughly ten thousand sandhill cranes spend the winter at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico. Many of them feed in corn fields, such as the one planted by Refuge staff near the 'Farm Deck' observation area, where I took these photos. Most of these birds are adults (with red crowns); the crane in the lower right is a juvenile. |
