The Bialowieza area in northeastern Poland sports a remarkable woodpecker fauna, with 9 species breeding. Probably the most spectacular of these is the crow-sized black woodpecker shown here. Despite their size (I am especially impresed with the large, strong feet like grappling hooks), they are quite wary and difficult to photograph, and I got only these three quick frames after it alighted -- briefly --on a dead tree. I took these pictures in the 'strict reserve' of Bialowieza national park. Other woodpeckers found in the region include the wryneck and the great spotted, middle spotted, lesser spotted, and three-toed woodpeckers, as well as the green, gray-headed, and white-backed woodpeckers. |
