Of the three 'spotted' woodpeckers in Europe, this one, the lesser spotted woodpecker, is by far the smallest. It is the size of a sparrow, and reminds birders from North America of the downy woodpecker. These were photographed in various places near the small town of Bialowieza, Poland (the only place where one can find all 9 of the woodpecker species found in that country). The bird at left above and clinging to the underside of a branch (below) are females; the others -- including the one drilling a nest hole -- are males. |
