The Bialowieza area in northeastern Poland sports a remarkable woodpecker fauna, with 9 species breeding. For birders from Western Europe, this is one of the most sought-after species: the three-toed woodpecker. It is a circumboreal species, found in the US and Canada as well as Eurasia, but it is very rare west of Poland. I took these pictures in the 'strict reserve' of Bialowieza national park. Other woodpeckers found in the region include the wryneck and the great spotted, middle spotted, lesser spotted, and black woodpeckers, as well as the green, gray-headed, and white-backed woodpeckers. Some of these birds are American three-toed woodpeckers and were photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. |
