Violaceous trogon        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The beautiful violaceous trogon is fairly common even in disturbed habitats in Panama. Males show brilliant blue tones on the head and chest, while females (below, right) are sooty black. Both sexes have brilliant yellow bellies and intricate tail patterns. Violaceous trogons are similar to the black-throated trogon, which is greenish rather than blue.   I photographed the male bird at the edge of the forest along the Panama Canal; the female came to an avocado tree near the back porch of our lab building in Gamboa.   Both birds were photographed on overcast days in dim light.  Another easily-found trogon is the slaty-tailed trogon.
