This small but lovely trogon lives in dense forests; in pattern it is similar to the violaceous trogon, with deep green tones substituted for the blue color on the latter species. I photographed this rather cooperative male during a walk on the Pipeline Road near Gamboa, Panama. It was in very dim light under the forest canopy, requiring a long exposure; fortunately, trogons typically perch quietly for long periods as they carefully scan the viciity for food (as this one was doing). Another easily-found trogon is the slaty-tailed trogon |
