The common snow goose occurs in two main color morphs: 'blue' and white. They are not genetically distinct populations (although the color is genetically determined), and sometimes one finds 'blue' birds mated with white birds. Personally, I find the highly variable 'blue' goose to be a more interesting subject than white birds -- at least, most of the time. At Bosque del Apache, probably 99% of the snow geese are white, and one has to look carefully to find a blue-morph individual, especially when flocks are passing by rapidly. These are some of my photos of 'blue' geese from a November 2010 visit. Other pictures of cranes and geese Bosque are here, here, and here; also, look at the Bosque del Apache page for photos from other visits. |
