Plummer's mariposa lily (Calochortus plummerea) is one of a number of beautiful Calochortus found in North America. Native Americans are reputed to have eaten the bulbs and cultivated mariposa gardens, and this may explain why these flowers are often found in fairly dense patches. I photographed these in the Box Springs Mountains in Riverside, California.
