Golden-bowl mariposa lily, Calochortus concolor        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The sago lilies, star lilies, mariposa lilies, etc. in the genus Calochortus grow widely in the western US and are among my favorite wildflowers   I believe this one is the golden-bowl mariposa lily, Calochortus concolor (I'm not completely sure of the species identification).   A loose group of about 10 plants were growing on a dry slope in the San Jacinto Mountains of southern California; during the drought year of 2015 their bright color stood out against the dusty slope.   It was a rather windy day so the photos were shot at a fairly high shutter speed.
Two other California Calochortus species are shown here and here.
