Several species of prairie dogs (genus Cynomys) inhabit open regions in western North America. Highly social, they live in colonies called 'towns' that in one species (the black-tailed prairie dog) once covered huge areas. Populations have declined due to farming and other human activities but they remain abundant in many areas. This species, the white-tailed prairie dog, has stronger head markings that most Cynomys and lives at higher altitudes than black-tails; these were photographed in northern Colorado. Pictures of its endangered relative, the Utah prairie dog, are here. |
