Two kinds of wild canids occur in Patagonia, the large coyote-like culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus) shown here, and the smaller, more foxlike chilla (Lycalopex griseus), or 'gray fox'. Both species were easy to find in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in south Chile, particularly the culpeo. Quite tame individuals can often be found around lodgings in the park, where they become accustomed to the presence of people. One of the culpeos pictured here acted almost like a guard dog, barking at me from a few feet away as I took photos of Magellanic woodpeckers. |
