Chilla, or Patagonian 'gray' fox        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Two kinds of wild canids occur in Patagonia, the large coyote-like culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus) , and the smaller, more foxlike chilla, or 'gray fox' (Lycalopex griseus), shown here.   Both species were easy to find in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in south Chile (where these photos were taken), particularly the culpeo.   Chillas were much less likely to be seen near hotels, etc., but we encountered several rather confiding individuals at various places in the park.
