The fairy-wrens are some of the most spectacular of Australian birds. This one -- the red-winged wren -- is the largest. Like most fairy-wrens, males are brilliantly colored with glittering purple and blue tones, while females are brownish and cryptic. Red-winged fairy-wrens are found in southwestern Western Australia; I took the photos in thick cover in Two Peoples Bay and in Kalgan, both near Albany.
In addition to the red-winged wren, I was able to obtain photos of several other fairy-wrens, including the varigated, superb blue, splendid, red-backed, and white-winged fairy-wrens. |
