As a group, the fairy-wrens are some of the most spectacular of Australian birds. This is the smallest and (despite the striking black and red plumage) perhaps the least flamboyant of the group. As is typical for other fairy-wrens, females (below) are brownish and cryptic. Red-backed wrens are found in grassy areas in northern and eastern Australia. I took the photos on the Atherton Tableland, in far north Queensland.
In addition to this species, I was able to obtain photos of several other fairy-wrens, including the varigated, superb blue, white-winged fairy-wrens, and the particularly stunning splendid fairy-wren. |
