Australia has a wealth of finches; most are small seed-feeders that often have some red coloration. This is the long-tailed finch, which I think is among the most elegant of Australian finches. It has a red bill which nicely offsets the gray, tan, black, and white plumage, and the long tail is quite striking. These were photographed near a small puddle in a dry creekbed in Kakadu Park, Northern Territory. Also drinking here were crimson, masked, and double-barred finches; the insanely bright Gouldian finch, although increasingly rare, also occurs in this region. |
