Gouldian finch        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Gouldian finches are among the loveliest birds I know of; I can't decide which of the color morphs (red-faced or black faced) appeals to me the most.   They are native to the northern tropic regions of Australia, but are declining rapidly in the wild.   Now they are mainly found in the Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of Western Australia, plus a few small populations in northern Queensland (where they used to be more widely distributed).   The two color morphs seem to be quite different in many ways besides plumage: they behave differently and have differing physiological responses, and may be incipient species.   These are captive specimens.
