Tree swallows are common and lovely little glittery-blue and white birds found throughout much of North America.   Males are easily identified by their brilliant metallic blue backs and pristine white undersides (their close relatives, violet-green swallows, are iridescent green above, with white rump patches and white around the eyes).   Females (immediately below at left) are somewhat less flashy, but still very attractive.   These were photographed at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, near Riverside, California.   Pictures of flocking tree swallows are on this page.
