Rainbow pitta        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Pittas are colorful, plump, short-tailed tropical birds that spend most of their time on or near the ground.   Australia has three species, the rainbow pitta shown here, the noisy pitta from eastern forests, and the red-bellied pitta from Cape York.   Rainbow pittas are in the 'Top End' -- the tropical north of the Northern Territory.   These were at Fogg Dam east of Darwin; the one in the tree baffled me for a while because it was calling loudly and I kept searching for it near the ground.   Finally I looked up and was (barely) able to get photos through a small 'hole' in the vegetation..
