Pittas are plump, short-tailed colorful birds that spend most of their time on the ground.   Three species occur in Australia; I've seen two of them, the noisy pitta shown here and the rainbow pitta from the 'Top End' (Northern Territory).   Pittas usually like to stay in thick cover so I was lucky to have these step into open areas to forage a bit.   They were at Kingfisher Park, in far-north Queensland (the species occurs in wet forests along most of the east coast of Australia).
