Ringed kingfishers are the largest of the New World kingfishers, ranging from south Texas into southern South America. In Panama most of them were quite shy, and I photographed one of these birds (below) out of a car window while waiting to cross a one-way bridge along the Panama Canal near Gamboa. Others (above) were photographed from a boat on the Manu River in southeastern Peru. Another common Neotropical kingfisher is the smaller green kingfisher. |
