Common potoo        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Potoos are large caprimulgids (nightjars) that resemble the frogmouths of Australia.   Active at night, during the day they perch upright and attempt to look like dead snags.   These pictures are of the common potoo.   One was photographed in mountain forest above Manizales and the parent and offspring were on the campus of Universidad ICESI in Cali (both in Colombia).   Another page shows the larger, paler great potoo from lowland Peru.
