Potoos are large nightjar-like birds from the Neotropics; they are strikingly convergent on the frogmouths of Australia. Potoos spend the day perched upright on trees, 'using' their cryptic plumage to remain inconspicuous; at night their loud calls are characteristic rainforest sounds. This great potoo (the largest of the potoos) was photographed near dusk at the lower end of the Manu Road in southeastern Peru. |
