Colombian chachalaca        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Several species of chachalacas are found in Latin America; one, the plain chachalaca, makes it as far north as southern Texas (others include the speckled and gray-headed chachalacas).  All are social, chickenlike birds with long tails and very loud voices, for which they are named. This one is the Colombian chachalaca, photographed in the city of Cali, Colombia, where it is common.
