The resting birds in the pictures above are all royal terns. The one at left is in winter plumage, with a whiteish crown and orange bill, and the one at right is in fresh breeding plumage with a jet-black cap and a more blood-red bill. These birds were on the beach just north of the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, California; another was at Crystal Cove State Park, a bit to the horth. The royal terns at sunset and the terns in the last two pictures were photographed on Honeymoon Island, near Tarpon Springs, Florida.
