Caspian terns        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Caspian terns are easily identified by their large size, big red bills, and loud calls.   Breeding adults have neat black caps; winter birds have white caps and black on the face and nape; youngsters show some brownish in the plumage.   Caspian terns are found throughout much of the world, and two of these images were made in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.   The other pictures were taken Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, in Pacific Grove, Carmel, or at the Salton Sea, all in California.   Many are carrying a fish back to their nests; one bird has caught a goldfish from a golf course pond in Pacific Grove.
