Black-legged kittiwakes are small, elegant gulls with yellow bills, 'dipped-in-ink' black wingtips, and black legs. They are abundant in the north Pacific and north Atlantic, and sometimes can be found far to the south. These were photographed behind a fish processing plant near Seward, Alaska, and on St. Paul Island in the Pribilof group in the Bering sea. The lower left picture shows kittiwakes and two larger glaucous-winged gulls; the closely related red-legged kittiwake is shown here. At the bottom right of the page is a picture of a juvenile bird in flight. |
