Common terns are widely distributed birds that nest in Canada and the northern US (and also in much of northern Eurasia). Like many terns they migrate to tropical areas during the winter. They closely resemble several other small terns, including the Arctic tern; the latter species usually has a completely red bill while common terns usually have black-tipped bills. Another close relative, the Forster's tern, which has a black-tipped orange bill and orange feet. I photographed these common terns at Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Montana. |
