Arctic terns are abundant breeders in northern Canada and Alaska; I photographed these at the 'grainary ponds' at Churchill, Manitoba, in Barrow, on the north coast of Alaska, and in Potter Marsh in the city of Anchorage, Alaska. In Churchill, most of the time they sit on the ground (or on rocks covered with bright orange lichen) when not foraging, but this bird liked to sit on a small, lichen-covered branch. The bottom image shows an incubating tern. The Alaska birds (including the fledgling) were in marshy or tundra settings. |
