In winter plumage, Bonaparte's gulls have a delicate subdued plumage with long wings and a dark smudge behind the eye. In summer they are much more striking, with a typical 'small gull' black head in breeding plumage, as seen at right and below. In all plumages their contrasting wing patterns are distinctive, although the pattern is a bit less dramatic in immatures. These gulls were at Bolsa Chica wildlife area in coastal Orange County, the Salton Sea, or in Palo Alto, all in California. Pictures of sitting birds are on this page. |
