In winter plumage, Bonaparte's gulls have a delicate subdued plumage with long wings and a dark smudge behind the eye (left). In summer they are much more striking, with a typical 'small gull' black head in breeding plumage, as seen at right and below. In all plumages their striking wing patterns are distinctive, although the pattern is a bit less dramatic in immatures (lower right). The winter-plumage birds were at Bolsa Chica in coastal Orange County, the Salton Sea, or in Palo Alto, all in California; one breeding-plumage gull at rest was on the 'Landing Lake' at Churchill, Manitoba. Pictures of flying birds are on another page. |
