Red-necked stint        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Red-necked stints are 'peeps' -- very small Calidris sandpipers much like the the least and western sandpipers common in North America.   Red-necked stints do have considerable rusty color when breeding but these winter adults are in typical subdued non-breeding plumage.   These were all photographed on the mudflats at the Esplanade in Cairns, north Queensland, Australia.
