In summer plumage, least sandpipers are subtly colorful little birds with tan, rust, and brown patterns on top, a streaky brown 'vest', and clean white underparts (above). Winter-plumage least sandpipers can be separated from the fairly similar western sandpipers by their smaller size, shorter bills, brownish instead of grayish coloration, and (usually) yellowish legs. The wintering sandpipers were at Fort DeSoto Park in southeast Florida, and several places in California: Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, (including the bird sitting on a wooden walkway railing), the Salton Sea, and the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside.
