The 'standard' crane in Australia is the brolga. The even larger sarus crane shown here was not even noticed as part of the avifauna until several decades ago, when some were observed flocking with brolgas in northeast Queensland. The two species can be identified by the greater area of red on the head and neck of the sarus (both species appear in some of the photos). Now sarus cranes have increased and often outnumber brolgas on the Atherton Tablelands, where these were photographed in agricultural fields with magpie geese and a few brolgas. They were quite shy, even though we stayed in the car. |
