The 'standard' crane in most of Australia is the brolga, shown on this page. The even larger sarus crane was not even noticed as part of the avifauna until several decades ago, when some were observed flocking with brolgas in northeast Queensland. The two species can be identified by the greater area of red on the head and neck of the sarus (both species appear in one of the photos). I photographed these brolgas on the Atherton Tablelands for north Queensland, where these were foraging in agricultural fields with magpie geese and a few sarus cranes, and near Yellow Waters in Kakadu Park in the Norther Territory. They were quite shy, even though we stayed in the car. |
