American white pelicans are huge birds with ludicrously long beaks and awkward-looking throat pouches, but they can be surprisingly dignified and even graceful in soaring flight, or sitting on calm water in soft dawn light. I photographed these pelicans just before and after sunrise (or just before dusk) at the Salton Sea in southeastern California. These are wintering birds; images of breeding pelicans, with the odd bill crest that makes them even more prehistoric looking than usual, are here; more pictures of mostly non-breeding birds are on this page. |
