American white pelicans        Images © Mark A. Chappell

American white pelicans are huge birds with ludicrously long beaks and awkward-looking throat pouches, but they can be surprisingly dignified and even graceful in soaring flight.   I photographed these pelicans in late April at the Salton Sea in southeastern California.   They are showing the bright bill color and strange 'crest' on the upper mandible that develop during the breeding season; images of mostly non-breeding birds are on here and here.   Pelicans always somewhat remind me of pterosaurs and the bill crests of breeding birds make them look even more prehistoric.
