Sooty shearwater        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Sooty shearwaters breed in the Southern Hemisphere, but like many shearwaters they make epic trans-equatorial migrations.  They are frequently seen in the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter off California; at times they can be extremely abundant.  These were photographed in Monterey Bay in early October; two photos show a mix of pink-footed and sooty shearwaters.
