Meadowhawks are a species-rich and often confusing group in North America (and elsewhere), This is the saffron-winged meadowhawk, named for the yellowish 'stigma' on the forewings. It resembles several other species, including the sympatric black meadowhawk, band-winged meadowhawk, and the very common variegated meadowhawk. This one was photographed deep in thick grass at River Spring in Mono County, California (many thanks to Ron and Barbara Oriti, who showed us where to find them). |
