Black meadowhawk (Sympetrum danae)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Numerous species of meadowhawks occur in North America (and elsewhere),   The black meadowhawk shown here has considerable sexual dimorphism, with blackish males and yellow-and-black females.  It resembles several other species, including the sympatric band-winged meadowhawk and the very common variegated meadowhawk.   Black meadowhawks may have quite local distributions; these were photographed at River Springs in Mono County, California (many thanks to Ron and Barbara Oriti, who showed us this isolated spot).
