The Biebrza National Park in the Podlasie region of northeast Poland has some of the largest marshlands remaining in Europe. In late summer, low fog often overhangs the wet ground in the broad, shallow valleys. These photos were taken from a lookout on the west bank of the Biebrza River near the village of Burzyn. I used a long lens to compress the scene. In the right image the small figure of an elk (= moose in North America) can be seen; note how the hue can change rapidly as the sun rises or moves through different thickness of clouds. My friend Marek Konarzewski took us to this lovely spot early on a September morning. Images of the sunrise, taken earlier in the morning from the same spot, are here. |
