Deep Canyon, Joshua Tree, Salton Sea, and the Coachella Valley

The Coachella Valley of southeastern California has Joshua Tree National Park to the north, the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains to the southwest, and the Salton Sea to the southeast.   My university runs a research station (Boyd Deep Canyon, not open to the public) in a steep-sided rocky canyon near Palm Desert, on the south side.   The station, with its comfortable but somewhat spartan facilities, is a striking contrast to the rich, expensive developments and lush golf courses of Palm Desert.   I've had the good fortune to do science at Deep Canyon and a lot of birding at the Salton Sea, and these pictures will hopefully give some of the feeling of these places.
