Smooth-billed ani        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Anis are strange, somewhat awkward-looking social birds in the cuckoo family.   Two species occur in the US:   the smooth-billed ani (found mainly in Florida) and the groove-billed ani.  Both range into Latin America; these smooth-billed anis were photographed on a ranch near Cali, Colombia.   A third species, the greater ani, also occurred there.
