Greater ani        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Anis are strange, somewhat awkward-looking social birds in the cuckoo family.   Two species occur in the US:   the smooth-billed ani (found mainly in Florida) and the groove-billed ani.  Both range into Latin America, where there is also a much bigger third species, the greater ani shown here.   This bird was photographed in a small park in Cali.
