Groove-billed ani        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Anis are strange, somewhat awkward-looking social birds in the cuckoo family.   Two species occur in the US:   the smooth-billed ani (found mainly in Florida) and the groove-billed ani shown here.  These photos were taken as the birds basked in the morning sun; the location was the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and at the nearby Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge.  A third species, the greater ani, is found in South America.
