Red-throated loon (summer)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like all loons, red-throated loons (called 'divers' in Europe) have a colorful breeding plumage and a more subdued winter plumage.   Their haunting calls, like those of common loons and Pacific loons, are familiar summer sounds on lakes in the far north.   Strangely, the bird shown on this page did not migrate north after wintering on Lake Perris in southern California -- even though it molted into typical breeding plumage.   Pictures of breeding red-throated loons in their normal Arctic habitat are here.   In all seasons, red-throated loons usually carry their bills tilted slightly upwards.
