Red-throated loon (winter)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like all loons, red-throated loons (called 'divers' in Europe) have a colorful breeding plumage (this page) and the more subdued winter plumage shown here.   Their haunting calls, like those of common loons and Pacific loons, are familiar summer sounds on lakes in the far north.   These were photographed at Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California.   In all seasons, red-throated loons usually carry their bills tilted slightly upwards.
