Pacific loons        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Pacific loons (despite their name) breed across the Arctic, where they sport an elegant gray, black, and white pattern.   They molt into a much less flashy non-breeding plumage during the migration south to coastal areas for the winter.   The breeding-plumage birds were photographed near Barrow, Alaska, and on a small lake along the 'Launch Road' east of Churchill, Manitoba.   Like other breeding-plumage loons (see these red-throated loons and common loons), they have insanely red eyes.   The winter-plumage loons were at Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California.
