Amberwing species (Perithemis spp.)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This small dragonfly was sitting near a tiny pond near the Pantiacolla Lodge in the Peruvian Amazon;   it closely resembles the Mexican amberwing, which is common near my home in southern California.   I took the pictures with a long telephoto lens at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California.   This little pond (maybe 100 m long by 5 m wide) also yielded photos of several other dragonflies (an Orthemis schmidti, an Oligocladus species, and Erythrodiplax unimaculata ) and quite a few birds (including the American pigmy kingfisher, black hawk-eagle, blue-crowned motmot, and white-browed antbird.
