Erythrodiplax unimaculata        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This striking dragonfly was photographed on a small pond near Pantiacolla Lodge in the Peruvian Amazon (I didn't notice the small damselfly perched nearby until I looked at the image). It was also common in the nearby forest, often perching on the ground.   This little pond (maybe 100 m long by 5 m wide) also yielded photos of several other dragonflies (an amberwing species, an Oligocladus species, and Orthemis schmidti ) and quite a few birds (including the American pigmy kingfisher, black hawk-eagle, blue-crowned motmot, and white-browed antbird.
